Why A Vegetable-Based Diet Is Necessary For Spiritual Mastery

Last updated: November 23rd, 2019

Remember the last time you ate a big portion of red meat and immediately felt tired, groggy and cognitively drained afterwards?

This is an extremely common theme when it comes to eating a diet heavy in red meats.

I used to eat a full on Paleo-style diet.

And while the Paleo diet made me feel incredibly full and nourished (I’m not going to lie) I simply couldn’t think straight after eating a meat-heavy meal.

It turns out digesting heavy animal carcass temporarily wastes a lot of your cognitive energy (brain power) and vitality in general. Go figure.

This is why top professional athletes like Tom Brady are switching to mostly vegetable-based diets.

The plant-based revolution is still in its earliest days. And it’s emerging from the top-down, starting with professional athletes, celebrities and CEOs.

It’s happening for good reason too.

Here’s something to think about.

When your body uses its energy to digest food, your body’s energy is essentially being depleted.

This is because your body “spends” its calories on chewing food, churning the stomach, creating stomach acid, creating enzymes, making rhythmic muscular contractions (which is a process called peristalsis) and so on.

Protein demands the most energy to digest, as 20 to 30% of the calories in protein go towards digesting the protein. Carbohydrates are the next digestion-heavy food in line, which require 5 to 10% of calories to digest. And then you have fats, which require 0 to 3% of calories to digest.

So here’s the most obvious problem at hand:

When your body’s energy is being depleted due to digestion, you won’t have nearly as much mental energy left over for…

  • Creating your art (you get to define what your “art” is)
  • Meditating
  • Exercising
  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Being fully present with your family
  • Being fully present with nature, people and the universe as a whole

So cognitive energy is the key factor you have to take into consideration when you’re deciding between eating meat and vegetables.

The act of digesting heavy meat temporarily robs you of your brain power.

And here’s the question you have to answer for yourself…

Would you prefer to have cleaner, more uplifting and spirited energy?

Or would you like to have less energy as you’re going about your day-to-day life?

If you’re like most people, you absolutely need to have far more energy for attacking life with everything you’ve got.

Our time on this planet is limited. Every passing moment counts.

When you eat a primarily vegetable-based diet, you’re optimizing your digestion, cognitive energy, and pathway to living the fullest life possible.

Why spiritual mastery starts with your digestion

Managing your digestion is the first and easiest step towards entering a spiritually enhanced state.

I recommend skipping breakfast completely.

There’s no real need to eat breakfast.

Your morning hours (from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.) are typically your most valuable hours for creating art, meditating, cycling through mantras and visualizations, or handling any pressing business obligations you might have.

Skipping breakfast frees your body from the need to digest matter during your most valuable and creative hours.

This gives you a feeling of immense clarity as you’re going through your morning routine.

Coffee or tea is all you need to maximize your “morning energy” and channel that energy towards creating the most powerful day possible.

How fasting during the day drastically improves your cognitive energy and state of awareness

Fasting drastically improves your level of cognitive energy for obvious reasons.

When your stomach isn’t digesting food, your cognitive energy can be channeled towards everything else you would like to accomplish throughout the day.

While I love eating high-quality and nutritious food, I’m not a fan of digesting food.

Too much digestive activity is the enemy of any spiritually-inclined person who wants to remain in a creative “flow state” throughout the day.

Luckily, fasting is the obvious solution to the problem of too much digestive activity.

Keep your body in a fasted state for most of the day. And you will enjoy significantly heightened mental clarity that enables you to live a more free and flexible lifestyle.

By the way, it’s for this reason that intermittent fasting is an incredibly popular style of eating among creative types and high-performers.

Intermittent fasting requires you to eat just one or two nutritious meals per day. That’s it.

When you eat just one or two nutritious vegetable-based meals per day, you remain in a powerful fasted state for most of the day.

You will feel unstoppable.

Fasting is ultimately what enables you to feel maximally energized and aware every single day of your life.

There’s a reason why fasting is a recurring theme in spirituality

A significant portion of the world’s cultures and religions practice a form of fasting, such as:

  • Buddhism
  • Christianity
  • Islam
  • Taoism
  • Many other religions

“A genuine fast cleanses the body, mind and soul. It crucifies the flesh and to that extent sets the soul free.”

~ Mahatma Gandhi

So regardless of your specific faith or spiritual preference, fasting is a proven method for thrusting yourself into a state of higher consciousness and connection with the universe at large.

People have used fasting to align themselves with a higher purpose for thousands of years.

Because when your stomach is empty, you have greater control over your energy, thoughts and life.

It’s just your mind, spirit, body and connection with the universe.

When it’s time to eat, the quality of your food influences your energy levels

I’m not anorexic.

And I obviously don’t want you to be anorexic.

Like I hinted at before, I’m a big fan of eating delicious, nutritious, high-quality whole foods.

I believe you should always source the highest-quality, minimally processed organic foods that you can afford.

Especially when it comes to plant-based foods.

Health is wealth. Your health is everything in life.

Investing in your health is like setting yourself up for a lifetime of creative energy, freedom and happiness.

It’s for this reason that sourcing organic vegetables from your local farmer’s market is ideal.

This way, you’ll come to know the people who grow your food.

And you can rest assured you’ll be eating a top-notch vegetable-based diet.

However, it’s understandable if you don’t have a farmer’s market in your local area.

In my area, I often have to visit my local Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods to pick up fresh vegetables.

Pay special attention to foods that optimize your gut health

There’s a powerful connection between your gut health and your brain function.

The gut-brain connection is a fascinating phenomenon that proves without a doubt the quality of your food intake influences your state of mind.

As you probably know, when your mind is in an optimal state, your life is in an optimal state as well.

So here are some “superfoods” that optimize your gut health:

  • Sauerkraut
  • Kimchi
  • Kefir
  • Kombucha
  • Garlic
  • Coconut oil

It’s important for you to prioritize eating these gut-enhancing foods every single day.

Because when you optimize your gut health, you also maximize your brain health, and this provides you with heightened levels of awareness and vision.

Be aware of the specific foods that energize your unique brain and body

These days, I eat a modified version of Tom Brady’s vegetable-based diet.

I’m not a professional athlete.

So I’ve taken Tom Brady’s diet, and tweaked it for optimal mental clarity, vision, awareness and energy.

I personally eat about:

  • 80% minimally processed organic plant-based foods
  • 15% organic lean meats
  • 5% organic red meats

I call this the 80/15/5 split.

These foods are more processed than I’d like them to be, but they do the trick (I should open a farmer’s market in my neighborhood)

This is what works best for my brain and body based on extensive trial and error.

I have experimented with a Paleo diet, vegetarian diet, keto diet and pescatarian diet.

But I feel most alive when I eat mostly vegetables and fruits paired with a bit of meat, seafood and healthy fats.

The 80/15/5 split works incredibly well for most people who are in touch with their spiritual side and energy levels.

Superstars and ordinary people alike benefit from living a vegetable-first lifestyle.

The vegetable-first style of eating is also sometimes referred to as a flexitarian or Mediterranean diet.

Because when you commit to eating a mostly vegetable-based diet, you will operate at a higher vibrational frequency than the mainstream masses, and you will live a more powerful, creative and spirited life.

I guarantee it.

Here’s something important for you to think about.

There’s a decent chance specific foods will work particularly well for your brain and body because of your unique genetic makeup.

So you have to experiment with your diet to figure out which specific foods work best for you.

In my case, I know that my brain and body responds incredibly well to:

  • Blueberries
  • Beets
  • Pomegranates
  • Chickpeas
  • Wild Alaskan salmon

So I incorporate these “personalized foods” into my diet way more often than other foods.

A big part of the reason why I prefer to live by the ocean whenever possible is because I love having access to fresh seafood and a Mediterranean or tropical climate that’s conducive to growing the freshest vegetables and fruits in the world.

But this is just what works for me.

You have to figure out which foods work best for your brain, body and lifestyle.

There’s nothing quite like designing your own diet that makes you feel incredibly energized and spiritually enhanced every single day of your life.
