The Meditative Benefits Of Manually Grinding & Drinking Coffee (JavaPresse Burr Grinder Review)

I’ll admit it. I’ve brewed coffee using an automatic coffee machine for a number of years now.

I worked at a coffee and wine bistro in college, and adapted to the convenience of having an automatic drip coffee machine, high-powered electric coffee grinder, milk steamer, and all the other pro-grade tools that hipsters (I mean baristas) rave about.

So why would I switch from a modern-day automatic coffee brewing set-up to a much more…traditional coffee brewing arrangement?

Well, after testing out the JavaPresse Manual Burr Coffee Grinder, let’s just say I love the ritualistic aspect of grinding your own coffee beans, smelling the aroma of freshly-cracked coffee grounds, and basically meditating in a trance-like state during the 5 to 10 minutes that the old-school coffee-brewing process requires.

Manually grinding your own coffee beans and brewing your own coffee using a french press is a meditative process that everyone should experience for themselves.

Why you should grind your own coffee beans

There’s a reason why specialty coffee houses grind whole coffee beans before making you a piping hot cup of brew.

Freshly-ground coffee takes your coffee-drinking experience to an entirely new level.

Pre-ground coffee tastes bland and stale.

Freshly-ground coffee tastes invigorating and alive.

In other words, once you start grinding your own coffee beans, it’s tough to go back to the tasteless pre-ground stuff.

So before you try grinding your own fresh coffee beans, make sure you’re okay with the possibility of never buying the pre-ground store bought stuff again.

Why the JavaPresse Manual Burr Grinder is now a major aspect of my daily coffee drinking ritual

If I had to summarize this entire review article, I’d tell you sourcing high-quality organic coffee beans and grinding your own coffee puts you a lot closer to Mother Nature than going to your local Starbucks and buying a cup of “artificial coffee” from there.

I have nothing against Starbucks of course. I actually enjoy their coffee every once in a while.

But the Starbucks experience is totally different from the grind-and-brew-your-own-coffee experience you can have from the comfort of your own home any time you want.

Now, when I need to take a break from work (I primarily work from home), I find comfort in knowing I can “zone out” for 10 minutes or so while I use my JavaPresse grinder in combination with a French press to brew incredible coffee the old fashioned way.

Side note: While using the JavaPresse to brew my first pot of coffee in the morning, I work through a visualization routine to ensure a powerful start to the day.

Mystic Future’s review of the JavaPresse Manual Burr Coffee Grinder

Here is Mystic Future’s full review of the JavaPresse manual grinder.

If you’re a coffee aficionado, I imagine you’ll want to hear the honest-to-goodness juicy details regarding the pros and cons of the JavaPresse manual grinder.

Let’s go.

Benefit #1. Consistency

This baby is consistent as hell.

The JavaPresse grinder cuts through coffee beans quite easily and gives you a consistent grind every single time.

I personally brew coffee with a French press.

Brewing coffee with a French press requires you to use coarse coffee grounds for the best results.

So, I keep the JavaPresse grinder set to a coarse grind 24/7.

But regardless of your preferred brewing method, the JavaPresse grinder has a click-wheel you can turn clockwise and counter-clockwise to find the perfect grind size for your brew.

JavaPresse actually has an incredibly informative section on their website that perfectly describes how to adjust their manual grinder.

“To adjust the grind size, I always start by tightening the burrs all the way until the adjustment knob won’t turn anymore. Don’t go crazy with it – simply stop when there is a considerable amount of resistance.

From here, turn the adjustment knob counterclockwise to create space between the two burrs. Count the clicks to measure how far apart the burrs are and determine the grind setting.

* Coarse (13-18 Clicks) – French Press, Cold Brew, Percolator, Coffee Cupping
* Medium Coarse (10-12 Clicks) – Chemex, Drip Coffee Makers, Vacuum Pots
* Medium (7-9 Clicks) – Pour Over Brewers (Including Ours), Aeropress
* Medium-Fine (4-6 Clicks) – Moka Pots, Pour Over Brewers, Aeropress
* Fine (1-3 Clicks) – Espresso, Turkish”

Benefit #2. Durability

Durability is one of my top priorities whenever I purchase a product.

I like to buy high-quality products that last a long time.

So when I heard a loud “thump” and realized my JavaPresse grinder had rolled off my kitchen’s island, and smashed against the tile floor, I was happy to see the JavaPresse was still in 100% perfect condition.

I’ve used the grinder many times since that incident without any issues whatsoever.

This is how I know the JavaPresse grinder is a strong and durable piece of machinery.

Benefit #3. Portability

Portability is one of the best selling points of the JavaPresse grinder.

Coffee lovers tend to travel with their coffee gear, and depend on a portable grinder that’s lightweight, easy to pack and carry on-the-go.

You can easily fit this grinder in a backpack, handbag or suitcase.

Take it with you anywhere you like.

If you’re a business traveler or nomad, you might even choose to pair your JavaPresse grinder with an AeroPress coffee and espresso making kit.

The JavaPresse grinder + AeroPress coffee kit is a common set-up for coffee addicts who need highly-portable equipment for a high-energy lifestyle.

My current set-up (as depicted in the images) is the JavaPresse grinder + SterlingPro French Press. I don’t travel around as much as I used to, so this set-up is what works incredibly well for me these days.

One minor critique

I only have one minor critique to add to this review.

To be fair, this critique applies to all manual coffee grinders and not just the JavaPresse coffee grinder.

Manual coffee grinders can be a bit tiresome, because there are going to be days when you’re feeling off, and the last thing you want to do is manually grind your own coffee beans.

Luckily, there’s a very easy solution to this problem

Electric coffee grinders are super affordable.

You can own an electric coffee grinder and a manual coffee grinder for less than the cost of dining out solo.

This way, depending on your mood, you’ll be able to switch between using a manual coffee grinder and an electric coffee grinder whenever you like.

If you’re feeling lazy, your electric coffee grinder will do the trick.

If you’ve just finished a load of important work, and you feel like you need to take a 15 minute relaxation session – using a manual coffee grinder is a surprisingly peaceful and meditative experience that most coffee lovers eventually come to appreciate.

Overall, if you’re in the market for a manual coffee grinder, you can’t go wrong with the JavaPresse Manual Burr Coffee Grinder.

It’s consistent, durable, portable and affordable.

You can travel with it, drop it a few times, and it will likely continue to work just fine.

And if you ever have any issues with your grinder, the JavaPresse team seems to run a very professional operation with a great customer service staff that will take special care of you.

While drinking coffee is always going to be 100% optional – I’ve personally made freshly-ground organic coffee a key aspect of my spiritual health and wellness.

You can do the same exact thing if you so desire.

P.S. Is it just me, or does drinking coffee seem to enhance your creativity and flow state? How does drinking coffee fit into your spirituality? Please leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

Thanks for your comment John! Did you reach out to JavaPresse and ask about a replacement grinder after your first one broke? They have excellent customer service in my experience. Either way, glad to hear they hooked you up!
