When I bought a $350 designer watch, no one really seemed to notice or care all that much. My Michael Kors watch is a sleek silver time piece. It’s a pretty nice watch. But at the end of the day, it tells the time, and that’s about it.

Just for fun, I picked up a bright red Casio Illuminator Resin Band Watch for about the same price as a Chipotle burrito with double chicken and guacamole.

My red Casio Illuminator screams for attention…and definitely gets the attention it deserves.

This article is a full review of my red Casio Illuminator model F108WHC-4A.

I’m publishing this review because I now consider this particular watch to be one of the best watches for running, going phoneless, hitting the gym, and not having to worry about scratches or damages.

Allow me to explain…

Why more people are replacing their smartphones with dumb watches

How often do you completely disconnect from your internet connection?

If you were born in the 1990’s or earlier, you probably spent a lot of your time totally disconnected from the internet.

Without smartphones, you could meet up with lovers and friends, and no one could reach you.

You had a sense of freedom.

Today, people are constantly connected to one another via the internet.

This is why more people are replacing their smartphones with dumb watches – at least for part of the day.

Today, I make it a point to occasionally go places without any internet-connected devices whatsoever.

I love the feeling of being 100% free.

This is why I wear my Casio Illuminator when I go on my nightly run.

To be fair, I might bring some cash and my driver’s license with me as well.

But I’ll leave my smartphone at the house.

I actually make it a point to spend at least a few hours per day completely away from internet-connected devices.

Don’t get me wrong. I love the internet. The internet allows us to share knowledge freely with one another.

But too much of a good thing can easily become a bad thing.

When smart watches were first being marketed on television, I thought to myself, “this is exactly how you turn a good thing into a bad thing.”

Again, I love technology.

I think smart watches have immense value for people who want to constantly be connected to the internet.

I’m not one of those people.

Now, when I feel like getting away from it all – I simply leave the smartphone behind.

I don’t need to read every single email or text message the very same second it’s received.

All I need to know is the time.

And that’s what my Casio Illuminator is for.

My review of the Casio Illuminator Red Watch (F108WHC-4A)

The Casio Illuminator red watch model F108WHC-4A is dirt cheap and sexy.

The bright red color of the resin band is a little bit outrageous. But that’s what I like about it.

The watch looks dangerous. In a good way.

It comes with Casio’s precise timing mechanism that is world-renowned.

I only have to change the time on my Illuminator twice per year, when Daylight Saving Time starts and ends.

If the USA ever gets rid of Daylight Saving Time permanently, I’ll probably never have to adjust the time on my Illuminator ever again, because it keeps time accurately.

The Illuminator also features a:

  • Stopwatch
  • Daily alarm
  • Backlight
  • Water resistance up to 50 yards
  • 7 year battery life with one lithium CR2016 battery (included)
  • Switch between 12-hour time and 24-hour military time

What more could you want in a dirt cheap watch?

It’s also worth noting the red Casio Illuminator is based on the octagonal G-Shock design.

So you’re getting a watch that vaguely resembles a G-Shock without the relatively high price point of the G-Shock.

I love G-Shocks as well. They’re great watches.

But you will have to pay quite a bit more cash for the G-Shock.

The Casio Illuminator is basically a lighter version of the G-Shock.

Why the red Casio Illuminator is excellent for running

I used to be a big fan of steady state cardio.

This means I would run at the same pace during every single workout session.

The problem with steady state cardio is that it’s an inefficient use of your time.

Steady state cardio is very good for you.

But you aren’t burning nearly as many calories compared to High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).

The Casio Illuminator is awesome for timing sprints.

The Illuminator’s stopwatch feature allows you to jog for a set period of time, and then sprint for a set period of time.

I like to jog for 5 minutes and then sprint for 60 seconds.

If you haven’t done much sprinting lately, you will be stunned by how much more fat you will burn from sprinting compared to steady state cardio.

Running sprints is a game-changer.

The goal is to time your sprints, so that you actually do them. Sprints can be difficult and exhausting.

If you have access to a real track, this is when sprints can actually be fun.

Having access to a track means you can time how fast you can run a 40 yard dash or 100 yard dash.

An entire track is 84 meters or approximately 92 yards, and this gives you a lot of extra motivation for doing HIIT exercises with your new watch.

Overall, you can’t be too picky when it comes to buying a watch at the absolute lowest price point available.

Casio is renowned for producing high-quality time pieces at a low budget price point.

With the red Casio Illuminator watch, you’re getting the absolute best bang for your buck and a time piece that looks good.

What more could you ask for?

(Other than maybe a G-Shock…which just so happens to be made by Casio as well…what a coincidence).
