What happens when you take 10,000 IUs of vitamin D every day?

It’s a question that had been on my mind for quite some time, ever since my Finnish cousin told me about her daily regimen that includes taking 10,000 IUs of vitamin D.

While I don’t live in Finland (I live in Texas, the opposite of Finland) – the winter season can get surprisingly dark and cloudy across most of Texas.

When our planet’s most important energy source (the sun) is no longer shining brightly over our hemisphere – vitamin D saves the day.

So let’s find out what happens when you take 10,000 IUs of vitamin D every day. Based not only on my personal experience, but the scientific research of experienced healthcare professionals as well.

What do the experts think about taking 10,000 IUs of vitamin D daily?

The consensus on taking 10,000 IUs of vitamin D daily is that it’s safe for most normal-to-larger-sized adults.

The Endocrine Society Practice Guidelines recommend that up to 10,000 IUs daily was safe for adults.

This is great news if you’ve been concerned about the possibly taking too much vitamin D3.

In all likelihood, if you’re a healthy and normal-sized adult, and especially a larger-sized adult, then taking 10,000 IUs of vitamin D each day shouldn’t be an issue.

The study in reference was conducted by Dermato Endocrinology and published on the PubMed website.

The study explains that researchers examined the effects of taking up to 15,000 IUs of vitamin D per day.

And here’s another valuable data point the researchers found:

The amount of vitamin D3 supplementation required to achieve a serum 25(OH)D above 100 nmol/L is on average 5,000 IU/d and 2–3 times more for overweight and obese individuals.

This means slimmer individuals likely only need 5,000 IUs of vitamin D3 rather than 10,000 IUs.

This makes perfect sense considering there are multiple different factors that determine how much vitamin D you may need to supplement with.

These factors may include:

  • Your bodyweight
  • The total amount of natural sunlight you’re exposed to each day
  • The climate and location where you currently reside

If you have any unique health conditions or questions, it’s best to consult with a trustworthy healthcare provider before taking large doses of vitamin D.

If you’re deficient in vitamin D, you’ll probably feel pretty amazing after taking 10,000 IUs of vitamin D each day.

If you’re a smaller-sized person, you might only need to take 5,000 IUs of vitamin D.

If you have a medium-to-large sized build, it’s possible that you may need 10,000 IUs of vitamin D to ensure that your system is actually getting enough vitamin D.

In any case, it’s vital that you get a blood test that accounts for your vitamin D level.

I’ve only recently started using a 10,000 IU vitamin D supplement.

The fact that 10,000 IU vitamin D supplements exist is another reason to consider taking 10,000 IUs of vitamin D daily.

This makes it pretty easy, right?

I would recommend going the same route as myself, and grabbing a quality 10,000 IU vitamin D supplement to make your life easier.

Today I use Pure Encapsulations 10,000 IU Vitamin D because it’s easier to take one serving of 10,000 IU vitamin D than it is to take two servings of 5,000 IUs vitamin D.

Admittedly, Pure Encapsulations is pricey because it’s pharmaceutical quality.

You normally have to get Pure Encapsulations from your local pharmacist or healthcare provider.

If you want the best, you have to pay for the best.

If you’re on a budget, I would recommend Jarrow 5,000 IU vitamin D (simply take two of these and you’ll be golden).

In summary, assuming you don’t live in a tropical Caribbean country with lots of sunlight, there’s a decent possibility that taking 10,000 IUs of vitamin D per day will significantly improve your quality of life.

Based on the research I’ve read and my own personal experience, taking a slightly larger-sized dose of vitamin D is one of the quickest and easiest “life hacks” around.
